Cortina is BOLOGNA VIOLENTA’s new Ep and a brief but poignant prog music manifesto. Our main goal is to tear down the musical and mental walls that confne within the same, tired old standards, when it comes to writing new music. Hence the title: Cortina, an iron curtain, an often invisible barrier that prevents us from stepping onto the road less travelled and into new and unchartered territory. This is why we decided to lose our trademark grindcore and metal guitars and to go for a raw and visceral effect, introducing a real drumkit, a violin and an old organ pedalboard. This was a step forward with an eye to the past, specifcally to a time when new musical languages were being researched and traditional instrument were used in original and innovative ways to provide new means of expression.
These ten tracks are often very brief, with unpolished and uncanny melodies: they convey the essence of their musical message with a zero-frills and straight-to-the point approach. The same, incidentally, of our debut album: direct, blunt and, in a way, violent. The titles are a transparent tribute to Demetrio Stratos, lead singer of Area, whose vocal experiments exposed the hidden potential of the human voice. He discovered (or rediscovered) certain characteristics of human vocal timbre that expand a human voice’s possibilities well beyond the simple melodic instrument we know. The covers features the famous ski jumping hill “Trampolino Italia” in Cortina D’Ampezzo, to symbolize the risk we took in writing and recording these tracks. There is a second meaning to this image: it exemplifes the majesty of abandoned architectures that are incorporated into what used to be wild and untouched nature, like permanent scarring left behind by human action on the planet. Cortina will be released on October 20th on vinyl (100 copies), audio cassette (100 copies) and CDr by Dischi Bervisti and it will be distributed in digital format by The Orchard.
